IELTs exams are a huge business in China and the demand for examiners increases all the time. Getting a British council job as an IETLS examiner creates a great opportunity for a flexible job with a good payment on the side. You can do it while building your business (or traveling) and developing your new idea in China.
First I’ll explain what IELTS exams are and why examiners are needed.
IELTS ( ‘International English Language Testing System’) is a proficiency English test which is required by many universities around the world mainly in English speaking countries, in order to determine the language proficiency level of the candidate. The exams were established in 1989 and are managed by the university of Cambridge, The British council and IDP education Pty LTD.
Don’t confuse IELTS with TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, this one is a different English proficiency test. Each institute has it’s own requirement for the students whether the candidate should take a TOEFL test or an IELTS test.

The IELTS exam consists of reading, writing, listening and speaking sections. As of now people in China taking this test need to pay 1550 RMB for taking the exam (Check this page as an example).
In recent years, the number of people in China who want to take the exam has grown rapidly, while the number of examiners remains too small for the demand. This is due to the fact that the new Chinese dream in terms of education is sending your child to a good US school which requires them to take the test. This fact actually is the reason that there will be job for IELTS examiners for a LOOOONG time in China.
IELTS Oral Examiners wanted
The examiners are wanted for testing the oral section of the exam. It’s a 12-15 minutes test, where you listen to a person speaking and rate his/her abilities. For each exam you are making 105 RMB. Each time you are registered to be an examiner, you will do 20-30 tests. So, it’s a nice amount of money for a 2 day work.
The oral tests are being held in 12 different cities in China. The British council who runs these tests will fly you around those cities and put you in nice 5 star hotels. They will arrange everything, you just need to come for the exam itself.
The oral tests are held Thursday-Sundays. There is a computerized system where you register for the time you are able to come and conduct the test.
In order to be an IELTS examiner you would need to be an English Language teacher, qualified through Cambridge ESOL programs and you would need a few years of teaching experience. If you have the experience but lack the certificate, it might be worthwhile to check out courses which provide it, it can be an intensive month long course, but the end result is worth it.
Written part IELTS examiners are missing too…
After you are an oral examiner for IELTS and want to extend the time you can work, what about Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays!?
You can take a test and become the writing section examiner as well. You can check up to 50-60 exams in a single day.
The nice thing about this job is that it’s very flexible and pays well, you can actually decide when you wish to work and meanwhile develop your own business.
