I claim that in todays’ environment some entrepreneurs find it hard to get their job done on time because they are accountable on the things they do only to themselves. It’s time to find a solution for this.
It’s liberating to work for yourself, I know this feeling very well. You are optimistic and thinking to yourself, “All is going to be okay!”, and this is the way people should think about entrepreneurship, without this set of mind it’s very hard to survive as entrepreneur.
I do believe that people should take their destiny in their own hands and control it as much as they can. A secured job is in illusion these days. An employer is here to… employ, once you are not beneficial for the organization or cost too much money you are out.
Fortunately throughout the world, entrepreneurship is flourishing and by 2020, 40% of the work force in America will be freelancers. It’s a huge number! So you are already on the right way!
Don’t think everything is perfect when you work for yourself though. It’s more like climbing a mountain which never ends and you are not sure what is the right path to the top, BUT you get to choose and decide of the path! You set the direction, pace, resting points, everything!
What happens then when you need to go through all these daily decisions to climb? How do you make yourself keep climbing? For me personally, it’s the knowsion I’m on my own and nobody does the work for me, so I’m in charge here.
But even then, working with yourself is hard, as you need to be accountable for the things you do. Now, who will you be accountable for, if not yourself? there is nobody else in charge on that mountain!
Unfortunately “Yourself” is a tricky person to be accountable for. If you get to decide to do something, you can also decide not to do it, or just rest (which is okay when you really need it), or just wonder around aimlessly.
Wondering aimlessly, like going on Facebook or watching “just one more” clip on YouTube is pretty rewording on the short-term. You get to do things you like and postpone the hard stuff you need to cope with like a steep path.
On the long-term in brings you nowhere. You stay at the same point and you feel angry at yourself for not making any progress. I admit, it’s a fine line between resting and procrastinating and I believe the answer lay on a shoulder for help when climbing. Someone you need to tell what your path is and where you are going.
Technology tries to solve this problem, and now that we are sleeping with our smartphones , they help us to climb up the mountain. (Note: Check out this book by Leslie Perlow. I haven’t read it, but it’s all over the place if you search for “sleeping with your smartphone”)
So, We do have this “someones” to help with the climbing, but the problem is they are not competent enough for our needs. It’s not enough share it with yourself, it’s not enough to tell it to your to do list app. As I said, you learn to ignore those because these are tools. You need a person for this, a real one! Not a tool!
Now over to you
What’s your take on this? How do you cope with climbing alone? Which tools are you taking along the way? which people are there to help you?
My new service will push you to finish your tasks on time. give it a try.
